Bridges in instant messaging are great! There's software like Parsee that lets Matrix and XMPP users chat, mautrix-discord that lets Matrix and Discord users chat, Matterbridge that allows users from basically any protocol chat with users from basically any protocol, and a whole lot more. It's probably the only way to use privacy-respecting protocols while still being able to have a large community.
